A collaborative approach to de-risking and commercializing floating offshore wind: spotlight on major component exchange

Sam Strivens, Manager Floating Offshore Wind, The Carbon Trust
Floating offshore wind is on the cusp of becoming a major zero-carbon energy source, both within the US and internationally.  Although the technology and cost reduction potential for floating offshore wind have been demonstrated, there are a number of challenges to address prior to build out of commercial-scale floating offshore wind farms.  Of these challenges major component exchange is considered key.  This presentation will provide an overview of the Floating Wind JIP – the world-leading collaborative R&D programme focussed on overcoming the challenges and identifying the opportunities for floating offshore wind.  The presentation will focus on the state of the art or major component exchange and explore technologies being developed to undertake replacement of major components offshore, as well as strategies for returning platforms to port.
