Principle Power WindFloat and Utility Scale Readiness

Out of a floating wind farm commercial project, the floater itself is expected to represent a sizable part of the CAPEX as the second position after the wind turbine generator (WTG) itself. This is obviously a major potential lever towards an optimisation of the levelized cost of energy (LCOE). As a floating wind pioneer, we have today 9 floaters manufactured and integrating the market largest WTG available. This unique track record is of course essential to fully grasp the magnitude of the challenges ahead for the industry, where delivering a floater per week is likely to become the new normal by the end of this decade. This leap to “full speed ahead” will not happen without a robust, innovative and yet realistic Project Execution Plan. Any process or design inefficiency stands to be repeated 30-50 times when moving to large scale projects. In that respect, leveraging the experience gathered on multiple real projects is key to success. Even though tomorrow’s WTG in the range of 15-16MW are very large objects, the impact on the WindFloat® dimensions itself is limited. The challenge to serial-produce these floaters remains however real. We propose to share with the audience a spectrum of real world experiences and lessons learned from WindFloat1 a decade ago to our current projects now entering in the water. We will also guide the delegates through a selection of upgrades implemented on the Windfloat® and associated installation strategies towards its industrialization path. This unique catalogue will capture some of the main challenges floating wind industry in general will be facing and how the market leader is addressing them, with a targeted LCOE of 30-40EUR/MWh for a mature commercial project (>500 MW) installed in the late 2020s.
